Hi Dan,
Thanks for the welcome. You remind me of a young tenor sax man I met when he was 13. His name was Arthur Rhames and he was talented beyond belief. He was extremely inquisitive and sought information from all sources. To me, the one thing that stood out about him was his ability to keep in touch with his self musically. His lifespan was short but rich. I mention him to you because ( for one thing) of a phrase you used " i don't know why". I'm one of those people who see "i" as all of the information you brought to this life. "i" needs to gain control of your mind so that "i" can express itself. You are your "i". "i" knows and must adapt to life on earth. Keep listening and learning with this in mind,
Bob

Thanks for letting me know about the Sonny Criss video on youtube. I have the video but didn't know it had been posted. Sonny was also on a tv show in the 1950s but only the audio survives. Too bad, because as great as he sounded on recordings, he was even greater in person--the kind of thing you would never forget. GHis other student, Sid Levy was great too, but never made any records that I know of.

Dan,
I love all of Gerry Mulligans work and his compositions, I was lucky enough to spend a few days hanging out with Pepper Adams when he was with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis band. I have not had a chance to really check out Serge Chaloff although I certainly have heard about his work.
I am also mainly an Eb player, the main reason being that after all the years that I have played with so many groups, I know all my tunes in the standard keys on my Eb saxes. When I play in Bb or C (I play flute also), I have to learn the tune all over again as far as having the changes fall under my fingers.
So good for you, and learn as many tunes by heart on your horns as you can, and play every chance you get and always take a solo. You will do fine if you keep it up.

Check out Dylan Cramer. He was one of Sonny Criss's only two students (Sid Levy was the other) and he is great.

Hi,

I'm glad to see Sonny Criss in your list of favorites. Sonny was a friend of mine and I was the other alto player on Sonny's Dream. You have great taste!
