Trombone Forum

Hello fellow trombonists! I play tenor and bass trombone (bass trombone is my true love), and studied with excellent teachers including Karl Hinterbichler (UNM), Gail Wilson (ASU), Charles Vernon (Chicago Symphony), and Larry Benz (NY Metropolitan Opera, Santa Fe Opera). I am also a jazz artist and have played with Woody Shaw, Dizzy Gillespie, The Gil Evans Orchestra and many others.I would like our discussion to be about absolutely anything you want to talk about -- your own experience and…See More

About Me:
I am a jazz bass trombonist/chromatic harmonica player. After about 20 great years in NYC, I have moved with my family to New Mexico, where I am meeting all kinds of great musicians and finally finishing my Master's Degree. I work year-round as a YAMAHA clinician and am beginning to finally record some of my own compositions, as well as working on new recording projects with people from all over the country. In addition with working with local groups in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, I have my own jazz trio and a new "electric" band (The Phunk-O-Matics) with a front line of trombone/harmonica, violin, and tenor sax. This group performs original music, plus covers by Chick Corea, Weather Report, Wayne Shorter, Monk, Trane, Woody Shaw, Dizzy Gillespie and more!
Musical Background & Experience:
A New Mexico native, Phil began his music career working with local "ranchera" artists Tiny Morrie, Al Hurricane and Lorenzo Antonio Sanchez. Phil was a founding member of the New Mexico Jazz Workshop in the late 1970’s. In 1979 he received a Jazz Scholarship to Arizona State, where he received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Classical and Jazz Performance. In 1982, Phil launched his full-time professional career with a world tour as bass trombonist with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Phil moved to Las Vegas in 1984 after touring, where he worked with the Relief Band, and then became House Bass Trombonist at the Flamingo Hilton showroom. He also worked as a commercial/jingle recording artist and was both a Guest Artist and Advisor for the Jazz Department at UNLV.

In 1986 Phil moved to New York City, where he spent the next twenty years performing as a jazz soloist/recording artist with artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Shaw, Clark Terry, Lew Soloff, the Gil Evans Orchestra, the Charles Mingus Orchestra, Richie Cole and the “Alto Madness Orchestra”, and Tito Puente. Phil also played with Charlie Palmieri at the Latin Grammy Awards, and performed as Harmonica Soloist for the Broadway show “The Civil War”. He also spent three years as trombonist and harmonica soloist at the Rainbow Room in the NBC building at Rockefeller Plaza, and was a performer for the “Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes” at Radio City Music Hall.

Phil is a YAMAHA Artist, and has done interviews and performances on the CBS Evening News, Fox National News, CNN-FN, Turner Broadcasting, Reuters Newsfeed via satellite to 32 countries, as well as local New York City news programs on Channel One News and Channel 2 CBS in New York City.

In the 1990’s Phil was a performer and lecturer at various functions and events such as the New York State Music Educator’s Convention and The New York Brass Conference. He served on Mayor Rudy Guliani's Education Committee for New York's Centennial 1996-1997, and was a full-time music teacher for the New York City Public Schools from 1999 to 2003, as well as working with District 16 as Staff Developer for Music Technology. In 2004 Phil returned to New Mexico, where he continues to teach and work as a freelance artist. After three more years of work with the public schools, Phil returned to the University of New Mexico where he received his Master’s Degree in Music Performance.

Currently, Phil is working throughout Central and Northern New Mexico with his jazz duo featuring legendary pianist John Rangel. Phil’s group, the Phunkomatics, features Phil on Bass Trombone and Harmonica, accompanied by Jazz Violin, Tenor Sax, and a smokin’ rhythm section. Plans for recording these ensembles are underway, featuring newly written compositions.

Phil plans to begin touring and performing with his groups, and as a YAMAHA clinician, in the very near future.

Phil enjoys working with young musicians and is a year-round clinician and private lesson teacher at Hummingbird Music Camp in Jemez Springs, and is currently working with a number of middle schools in the Albuquerque area as a clinician.

Phil taught a course on Musicianship at the University of New Mexico last year, and just recently became a member of the Jazz Faculty at Northern New Mexico College.

Why I love jazz:
I was inspired at a young age by jazz artists who toured and visited schools in the 1970's people like Clark Terry and Bobby Shew. I wanted to be like them, and still do!

Hi, Phil. Say, did you ever get to work with Greg Wing while you were in Vegas? He and I went to Morehead together. John Hall and Tom Jenkins (trombone) were in Vegas for a while too at some point. Great cats.
