About Me:
Born in upstate New York, Kyle Vock began playing the upright bass at age 18, and within his first year of study, chose to pursue music in college.

In 2004, Vock began working toward a Bachelors Degree in Music from the State University of New York at New Paltz. Vock studied jazz with John Menegon at the University, and co-founded the New Paltz Jazz Society. Serving as president of the Jazz Society from 2006-2008, Vock was successful in organizing and planning workshops and performances by musicians such as Rufus Reid, Karl Berger, and Jack Dejohnette. In the summer of 2007, he studied classical bass with Phillip Helm, principal bass with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic. Vock worked as a freelance musician during his undergraduate years, performing regularly with the College Youth Symphony of SUNY New Paltz and the Ulster Community College Big Band. During his last two years of undergraduate study, Vock performed regularly throughout the Hudson Valley with a dance and music revue entitled “A Perfect Gift: All that is Jazz”. He also recorded a CD with the group in 2008 (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/aperfectgift).

Since graduating from New Paltz in 2008, Vock has been working toward a Masters Degree in Jazz Performance from the Eastman School of Music, where he was awarded a partial tuition scholarship and a teaching assistantship. Vock currently instructs a basic jazz bass course for undergraduate and graduate students and teaches electric bass lessons. In March of 2009, he performed with Grammy Award-winning composer Jeff Beal and the Eastman Studio Orchestra. In the fall of 2009, he performed with Lee Konitz and Harold Danko as part of Konitz’s 82nd birthday celebration. Vock also performed at the Gerry Niewood Memorial Concert with the Eastman Jazz Ensemble directed by Bill Dobbins, accompanying Lew Soloff, Pat LaBarbara, and Adam Niewood. Vock currently works as a freelance musician in Rochester, performing with a variety of instrumentations ranging from big bands to duos.

Kyle is proud to have participated in single performances with musicians including Rufus Reid, Rebecca Coupe Franks, Jeff Beal, Ray Levier, Teri Roiger, Matt Wilson, and Frank Kimbrough, among others.

Since graduating from Eastman with a masters degree, Kyle plans to continue studying jazz bass with Larry Grenadier and Jay Anderson, both of whom reside in the Hudson Valley.
