About Me:
John Damberg is the Instructor of Percussion at the University of Alaska Anchorage where he directs the UAA Percussion Ensemble, maintains a full studio of percussion students and he teaches courses in Percussion Methods, and the Appreciation of World Music Cultures. In 1995 John founded the Alaska Jazz Workshop, a non profit Jazz Education Institute where professional jazz artists mentor with Middle School, High School and College age students. Courses taught include jazz improvisation, theory, Jazz History, jazz repertoire and performance skills. Since its inception the Alaska Jazz Workshop has worked with over 2000 students. John is also the president of the Percussive Arts Society Alaska Chapter (PAS).

As a composer John is focused on writing original music for: the John Damberg Latin Jazz Quintet, , the JoMaLa Jazz Quintet, the Human Hands Composers and Improvisors Ensemble, the Sourdough Ragtime Orchestra, and feature length travel and industrial videos using computer technology. To his credit are many CD releases including: Azure-JoMaLa Jazz Quintet (2005), Angie’s Samba-John Damberg Latin Jazz Quintet (1998), Human Hands (1993), the Chilkoot March (1990), and Soaring (1986).

As a performer John is very active in the Anchorage Music Scene. He is the leader of the John Damberg Latin Jazz Quintet, co-leader of the JoMaLa Jazz Quintet; he has performed regularly with the Anchorage Symphony and he has backed up numerous nationally acclaimed jazz artists including: Wynton Marsalis, Bobby Shew, Oscar Stagnaro, Steve Erquiaga, Mimi Fox, Michael Davis, Carl Saunders, Michael Davis, Jovino Santos Neto, Denis DiBlasio, Don Lanphere, Dan Balmer, Rebeca Mauelon, Joshua Davis, Bobby Watson, and Saturday Night Live Percussionist Valerie Naranjo.
