Aural Facility Physical Facility Mental Facility
Most students of jazz have relied on their aural and physical facility to "get the job done". This works for a while, but it's not going to get you through "All the things you are", "Giant Steps", or any standard that utilizes more than a 12 bar blues progression.
Think of "speaking" jazz, as if you were learning a new language, like french. It's one thing to be able to learn some phrases, and how to pronounce them, but until you learn the GRAMMAR, you aren't really going to be able to converse.
