Serious about developing your improvising? Well, you can't speak creatively in a language that you are not articulate in. I've got a really comprehensive method that I've put together after teaching jazz for 34 years. Please check it out. Well - a new year under way. I teach jr. high band (gr.7-9) and I just finished a "jumpstart" with my grade 7's. We have a small school (~300) and out of the grade 7s I have around 75 students in three classes, one gr. 8 band of 37 players, and one gr.9 band of 35 players. As well I teach a guitar class to 23 students. Not bad considering that our school is from K-9 and only the jr. highs take band. This leaves about 40 students in the jr high part of the school not in music. I love my job!

Back to the jumpstart - i was enjoying listening to the first toots and squawks coming from the various rooms on Saturday morning - it got me pumped to get these kids really into the music.
There was one trumpet student who could not make a sound on his mouthpiece so I tried the 'straw' method. I first learned of this from youtube on a military trumpet lesson video - amazing: he got the sound immediately after I removed the straw.
