New bass book about Paul Chambers is now published.

 

Paul Chambers (1935-1969) is one of the legends in jazz and one of the most important bass players in the history of jazz. He won his fame above all as a member in the Miles Davis Quintet and John Coltrane Quartet in the late 1950′s. Chambers recorded in his short career hundreds of albums as either a band leader or as a bass player with for example John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Art Pepper, Sonny Rollins, Wynton Kelly and Jackie McLean. Chambers was one of the most competent bass players of his time and has a lot to teach also to the present day bass players.

 

The book’s main interest is to analyze the main characteristics of Paul Chambers’ style according to the transcriptions. The book includes seven full-length transcriptions as well as theory. The book’s aim is to present Chambers’ musical vocabulary and his ideas about creating bass lines according to the transcriptions.

 

“It may be helpful just to see what someone like Miles played, but the books don’t really teach anything about why Miles did what he did, what his thinking was. That’s what’s needed.”
